Re: Best Compilation
Tue, March 16, 2004 - 1:31 PM"coldkrushcuts" on ninja-tune. 2 discs one mix by dj krush, the other by dj food/coldcut. one of the most amazing mix cds EVER. the coldcut "journeys by dj" is legendary, and paved the way for this mix, but i heard "coldkrush..." first, and was spoiled.
for straight-up comps (i.e., not mixed) i'd say check out the "rebirth of cool" series on 4th & broadway. all of those are stellar, and are a good snapshot of the year that they came out--get the imports though for vols. 1 & 2 (the u.s. versions are numbered differently, and start with the import version's vol. 3) -

Re: Best Compilation
Tue, April 6, 2004 - 2:52 PMwell, after hearing "coldkrushcuts" it's hard to go back to coldcut's jdj, but their jdj was the first mix to really do that kind of thing. according to the guy that started jdj, they were also the first djs to really get the point of what he was trying to do.
so although i prefer "coldkrush..." i gotta give it up to jdj for innovator status--you can't front on that. i think it was also the most requested of all of the jdjs (it was out-of-print for many years.)

Back to Basics - Acid Jazz Compilations 1 and 2.
They both kick ass and have a nice variety in them. There are a bunch in these series.

Wed, March 17, 2004 - 12:41 PMt-bird is right, coldcrushcuts is an awesome compilation. my favorite is the dj krush side as i was turned onto a great group called 'the london funk allstars present: flesh eating disco zomies versus the bionic hookers from mars.' a ninjatune classic circa 1996. i was lucky to get that one on vinyl.
i also agree that the rebirth of cool series is great listening. still diggin those comps.
my other favorites were the dorado compilations featuring jehlisa, outside f/ matt cooper, and also any compilation put out by the label quango.

matt essentially WAS outside. he's got a partner now, andreas allen (engineered "rough & smooth.") they joined forces with jez colin of solsonics fame to form the excitingly named "latin project."
on the newer stuff, keep an eye out for a label called electric monkey--latin project is on there, and i suspect they'll have one or 2 other acts worth your time soon. -

Wed, March 17, 2004 - 1:46 PMtoo cool. i loved outside and soul sonics. i really dig the latin, electro, house vibe of latin project. great music. i need to get latin project on vinyl. matt also contibuted to the latest incognito release 'who needs love'.
i believe there is a website for electric monkey. yeah, its www.electricmonkey.com . bird, you really know the dope cuts. -

Re: Best Compilation
Wed, May 12, 2004 - 5:33 PMMy #1 pick would have to be Stolen moments:Red, Hot, and Cool which had amazing jazz funk cats like Roy Ayers, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis, and Donald Byrd mixing it up with the likes of Me'shell Ndegeocello, the Roots, Spearhead, Bernie Worrell, Groove Collective, the pharcyde, Digable planets, U.F.O.,Ronny Jordan, and Incognito. Oh and then their was a deep jazz vibe represent' too-Pharoah Sanders, Lester Bowie, Joshua Redman, Don Cherry, and my man Ron Carter. Don't forget Umar Bin Hassan from the Last poets screamin' his head off. Did I mention that biscuit dropped in 1994?!! That sucker was way ahead and beyond its time.
My close second choice would have to be "Mo' Cookin'" on Ubiquity. The other cookin' comps were hot too, espescially home cookin'. Those two still find there way into my earholes on a regular basis. Something about their gritty vibe, funky spirit, stellar musicianship, and tight grooves that give them a really cohesive vibe and style.
