since answering the question "what is acid-jazz" almost always starts w/a really long "ummm..." why don't you give a list long or short of classics that help define the genre for you??

i'll go first:

jamiroquai "emergency on planet earth" (lp)
omar (anything, but particularly stuff on talkin' loud or kongo)
"rebirth of cool" series
"totally wired" series
"fat jazzy grooves" series
miles davis "doo bop" (lp)
herbie hancock "call it 95"
young disciples "road to freedom" (lp)
guru "jazzmatazz vol.1" (lp)
solsonics "jazz in the present tense" (lp)

wow! i haven't heard anyone talk about these guys in a while! one of the main guys was the gtr player yogi, who i met thru a drummer in one of my (acid) jazz groups years ago (yogi was a housemate/buddy). yogi's a rock star now--haha! he was playing for a while w/meredith brooks (had that pop-rock tune "bitch,") and then he joined buckcherry!! if you look up buckcherry on allmusic.com he's the 2nd from the left. he's an amazing guitarist, and although he had to go to rock to do it, i'm really glad he made some money and lived "the life" even if only for a while--i don't know what he's doing now, but i could probably find out if you're interested...

Yogi plays with the Wallflowers now. I met Yogi when he subbed for our guitar player in "Action Figure Party," another great acid jazz group, but too recent to be classic. He had groupies from his BuckCherry days waiting for him all over Japan. HaHa!

That's funny. He was a full on rockstar when I played with him, all those cute little Japanese groupies following him all over Japan. They even knew his flight number, and were waiting at the airport!
Action Figure Party was a gas to play with. We still might play again if our leader, Greg, has a free moment(he's a rock star these days, too).

The first stuff I got into was the This is Acid Jazz series on Instinct. Goes way back to stuff like A Man Called Adam, Night Trains, Exodus Quartet, etc, etc. Also good is the Acid Jazz Test series. Best stuff I own hands down tho' is the Cookin' stuff from Ubiquity, true jazz grooves from groups that just hit the nail on the head for great music. Dig it!

you should really check out the "totally wired" stuff on the acid-jazz label, "rebirth of cool" series on 4th & broadway and the dorado label compilations. instinct (this is...) and moonshine stuff (acid-jazz test) often cribbed from these english compilations.

Miles Davis, "On The Corner". Jack DeJohnette is my hero on this.
    Herbie Hancock, "Chameleon"

that usually falls under my "sub-category" of rare-groove, but if you haven't already, go buy "thrust" NOW. harvey mason's drumming is pretty dope, but mike clark is AMAZING w/herbie.

Blunt but true!!!! Adam Deitch (John Scofield Band, A.W.B. fame)said the same and it was true. Even found it on Vinyl eventually.

        Just a few

Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" - broke my cherrie
Herbie Handcock "Thrust" - of course
        The Meters - anything

Can we include Nujazz here since there isn't a specific tribe and this is close...?
    • Re: acid-jazz classics??

      Sun, December 21, 2003 - 3:35 PM
      of course!!

i'm not the moderator of the tribe, but i would figure that he would be ok w/us getting into the stuff that the acid-jazz torchbearers (gilles peterson, patrick forge, etc...) would be into now, and nu-jazz is definitely part of that. also, broken-beat, and the more jazzy, musical aspects of house, 2-step & d&b/jungle (e.g. hospital records, dj marky & patife.) how can you not consider jazzanova or nuspirit helsinki off-topic in acid-jazz?

yeah with 'apparantly nothin', that track was hot. what happened to them?
        • Re: acid-jazz classics??

          Mon, March 1, 2004 - 9:52 PM
young disciples broke up immediately after the release of that album. carleen anderson went on to do a couple solo albums for virgin, true spirit and fortune's drive (uk import). paul weller produced carleen's fortunes drive album and co wrote some of the material. she also did some guest vocals for agent k (giant steps), a single for lock, stock and two smoking barrels uk soundtrack with lewis taylor, a remake of a pete wingfield song called '18 with a bullet.' the last i heard of her was that she was to replace shieda garrett for the brand new heavies. the only thing i've seen come from that collaboration was a single called saturday nite. the other two members worked with paul weller (the jam, style council) on his solo albums, They also worked with loose ends. marc nelson and brenden lynch who produced a lot of wellers solo stuff. more weller connections to the YD are that road to freedom was produced and recorded at solid bond studios where a majority of the style council material was recorded. solid bond was then sold to the cure. also another style council member, mick talbot also appears on the road to freedom album. road to freedom was defiantely a classic acid jazz album.
          • <she also did some guest vocals for agent k (giant steps)>

agent k is kaidi tatham who is part of "bugz in the attic" but he goes way back too (herbaliser, etc.)

<the last i heard of her was that she was to replace shieda garrett for the brand new heavies. the only thing i've seen come from that collaboration was a single called saturday nite.>

ironically, the OTHER thing they released was a cover of "apparently nothing"--mediocre imo.

chris (or anyone that knows, really) are marcus nelson & bagga demus the same person?
            • <are marcus nelson & bagga demus the same person? >

I am looking at the young disciples cd and it appears that marc. o. nelson (aka marc nelson) and demus are two different people. mark is listed with many of the albums cowriting credits, and plays fender bass, hammond, beats, guitar & organ. demus is has three cowriting credits, beats and is listed as co producer of the album with the young disciples. haven't heard of any demus after that, maybe on some paul weller albums? i'll check.

<ironically, the OTHER thing they released was a cover of "apparently nothing"--mediocre imo.>

bnh really did a cover of apparently nothing? scary... bnh and carleen anderson i thought would make a great combination. too bad no full length ever surfaced...

Not too many people I know like the Mushroom Jazz series or have even heard of Zero 7.

I haven't heard of London Funk Allstars. I will have to check them out. You should check out Jersey Street....great band from Scotland I believe.

are you saying they DISlike mushroom jazz, or just that they're unaware of it?

i've heard of jersey street, but i don't know their sound--how would you describe them?
        • Re: acid-jazz classics??

          Thu, June 10, 2004 - 6:55 AM
I think a little of both...some unaware, some aware and just not their style. Unfortunately many of my friends aren't into this kinda of music, so I rarely get to bounce artists and ideas off of anyone.

YES! Jersey Sreet is really good. I just moved and still have my CD's packed away. I need to refresh my memory on their sound, but off the top of my head I'm thinking a little Brand New Heavies, just turned down a tad. I think you'd really enjoy them. Of course the only CD that I have of them is a copy. Been trying ot hunt down an original, but since it's an import and they are kinda obscure it's been hard.

            Hi!

I'm going to start a new topic to focus more on this subgenre (or my interpretation thereof).

I will call it... downtempo nuskool favorites

Is Jersey St. the same as the Jersey St. all stars? They got a cut out now called "Burnin'" that is red hot. Speaking of red hot, that is about the only thing yall did not cover above, the red hot and cool comp "stolen Moments". The track with Herbie and Me'shell N'degeocello "nocturnal sunshine" is probably my fav AJ track. Stolen moments is definitly my favorite acid jazz comp ever. Also nobody mentioned the first Ronny Jordan album, "the antidote". There are some really fly tracks on there as well. As for vintage herbie, has anyone heard "flood", the double live headhunters from Japan? Those who like "thrust" should definitly seek it out. Its way hard to find but it has some incredible stuff on it. Oh, for people into nu jazz, there is another tribe worth checking out-namely the Broken Beat tribe. Definitly a good group of peeps on there.
