downtempo nuskool favorites

It seems like we're talking about a lot of different subgenres of music here, so I'd like to create a new topic that will hopefully home in on whatever it is I mean by the above.

For people in the SF Bay area, perhaps we could organize a sort of listening party (or some other way of sharing music without running afoul of the law, <cough cough>) if there is interest.

Examples I like:

Zero7: Simple Things
Marc Moulin: Top Secret
De-Phazz: Detunized Gravity, Death by Chocolate
Hotel Costes #'s 2, 3, 4, 5
Mushroom Jazz #'s 1 and 4 (though I prefer #1 in a mix with other CDs; the beat gets a little too monotonous for me at some points when I listen to it straight through)
Llorca: Newcomer
Lemon Jelly: ky

Examples I don't like:

Nuspirit Helsinki
Jazzanova
Mushroom Jazz #'s 2 and 3
De-Phazz: Godsdog (though it has some good tracks)
Lemon Jelly: Lost Horizons

(most of these are OK but not worth my listening time)

Some things that probably aren't Acid Jazz but sort of fall in the same cognitive category for me that I like a lot:

Rinocerose: Installation Sonore
Fourtet: Dialogue, Pause
State of Bengal: Visual Audio
Loop Guru: Duniya
Plaid: Double Figure, Rest Proof Clockwork
A Grape Dope: Missing Dragons
RjD2: Dead Ringer
St Germaine: Tourist

    all of the Costes Suite
    Dj Cam

    Nightmares On Wax
    Kaskade
    St Germaine
Mushroom jazz #1 was the only one i liked from that series...set the standard too high for the rest

I'm not feeling Zero7 but I do like Nuspirit Helsinki...Diana Park Nights is one of my fav tunes by them.

loard knows which catergories these fall in but i dig 'em

Thanks for the tips. I noodled around on Amazon and liked the p'taah stuff I heard, going to check it out at greater length.

While I was noodling around I checked out Morning Light by the Ananda Project. Anyone know about this group/record?

      Bruce :-)

ananda project is another alias of chris brann--the one who would be p'taah (egyptian deity), or wamdue kids (what i'm gonna do...) very nice stuff, also check out the record he does under his given name...

Unfortunately I'm not as scholed on the different subgenres of acid jazz. I'm the type to group everything from Estero, Brand New Heavies, Morcheeba, and Jamaroquai all in the same group.

I have used Ishtar's Guide to Electronic Music (I will post the link later on for those who haven't seen it before) as a guide for downtempo music, but in the end I still group it together.

I am open to any observations I should listen to in catagorizing music (and obviously music reccomendations). :)

sounds like your definition of "downtempo" refers more to the "vibe" than the actual *tempo.*

    example: llorca.
i have "newcomer" and that's a *house* record.

i also find it curious that you like them, marc moulin, de-phazz, four-tet & st. germain but you DON'T like nuspirit helsinki... they have SO much in common with those other groups...

you should check out some of the old ninja-tune comps (e.g., funkjazzical tricknology)--i think there's some other groups you might like.

btw, acid-jazz is whatever you say it is. or at least that's how it was at its inception...

yes, I agree that my definition of downtempo doesn't refer too much to the actual tempo. I put together a mix cd I called "Upbeat downtempo" to try to capture this idea...

My brother is a trained musician who can hear and understand the technical genre and subgenre distinctions, and all I really learned from our conversations is that I don't have that talent.

Surely I'm not too far off in thinking that Llorca:Newcomer is at least a little jazzy? Is there a category name for jazzy house?

I can't tell you why I differentiate between them and NuSpirit... just that I've listened to NH several times and it just leaves me cold. I don't know why.

Thanks for the tip about funkjazztical tricknology! I also have one of the rebirth of the cool comps coming my way based on your previous recommendation.

yes, it's called (wait for it)
        jazzy house!

house & acid-jazz are not mutually exclusive. there's a series called "jazz in the house" you might like. on gilles peterson's comp "worldwide 3" there's a tune by rsl called "wesley music" that is jazzy house. listen to it first before you rush out and buy it, it may remind you too much of nuspirit.

Thanks again for the tips... don't worry, I do some listening research before I buy.

Stephanie's Ishtar site was interesting. I definitely like the loops she has playing in the Acid Jazz area, but I still don't quite get why they are there and not elsewhere!

Hi I-Cue, thanks for the list. We have some things in common, so I will cheerfully try to find the stuff I don't know about...

I really like RJD2 Deadringer, too. What do you think of his new album, Since we last spoke?

I just heard the new zero7, when it falls, over the weekend. I was disappointed, since I dug Simple Things so much. I'm not angry about it, though <grin>.

I'll send you a private message about the last item in your post.

      Hedfunk

      Coldcut
      St. Germaine
      Fila Brazilia
      K&D

hedfunk and coldcut are the same people. and previous to "kaleidoscope" so was dj food--sort of.

coldcut is matt black (hat) & jonathan more (glasses)
hedfunk & dj food is them plus other people. usually: pc (aka patrick carpenter) and strictly kev. NOW pc & kev are dj food--exclusively.

my original interest in this genre undoubtedly's gotta be the cocteau twins. which led to portishead, my bloody valentine, then massive attack and morcheeba. with a bit of ivy and supreme beings of leisure thrown in for good measure ;-)

in the past couple years, i have devoured everything i can get from st. germain, kruder & dorfmeister, lamb, thievery corporation, zero 7. the remix of bebel gilberto's tanto tempo is also near and dear to my musical heart.

<cocteau twins. which led to portishead, my bloody valentine, then massive attack and morcheeba. with a bit of ivy and supreme beings of leisure thrown in for good measure ;-)>

that's funny, doesn't my bloody valentine precede cocteau twins? you need to check more of the bristol vibe--look for smith & mighty.

more suggestions--look for le funk mob (mo'wax.) more jazzy french stuff. they later turned into cassius, but i prefer the funk mob stuff. they also used to make beats for mc solaar. if you like samba (i prefer it to bossa nova--what bebel & astrid are known for) check out da lata's "from the tin."

i spose they do, but i heard of cocteau twins first (late mid-80s) and a friend turned me onto my bloody v in 93.

          thanks for the reco's!!!!

bossa nova is my official lounging-in-the-sun-and-grilling-out" music. always makes me feel like I'm on vacation..

bossa and samba and basically all brazilian-originated music delight me pretty much without fail ~ whether it's the cheese of girl from ipanema, the angelic whisper of a caetano veloso classic, or the various electronica-styled renditions of sem contencao, i want more more more!

do you know about dj marky, patife & xrs? brazilian drum & bass--sao paulo stylee! at worst it's repetitive and wimpy (rarely) but the stuff that's on point is TIGHT!!

brazil e.p. from v recordings is quite nice.

Anyone on this list dig environ records? I have to say the metro area cd is a modern masterpiece(www.environrecords.com for sound samples). Very evocative, with a throbbing groove, great vibe, and a futuristicly retro style. Some of the cuts are playful and funky, others are subtle and subdued, but all have groove and character. Its not quite straight down tempo, as the groove hovers nebulously between down and up. Still I thought it would fit right in to the discussion-its incredible late night chill music, and espescially great for naked dancing in bed with that someone special. Label mate Daniel Wang has great tracks too and can also be heard at the same site. Check it out.
