I've been moderator of ORNITHOLOGY tribe,(which has about 32 members also) since about 2003 when the previous moderator Justin suddenly turned the tribe over to me due to some issues of his personally.

I'd found tribe.net from doing a web search for "Charlie Parker" which had impressed Justin; who is a musician in the bay area playing guitar in the styles he learned living in France about fifteen years or more ago with the Manouche' Gypsies who are the tribe Django Reinhardt is from.

As moderator of ORNITHOLOGY tribe I've made a few posts; but have deleted them as not too appropriate or interesting. The tribe has grown from seventeen to the current thirty two since I joined, but though an interesting looking group never a lot of interaction. I hadn't checked out what was going on there for some time; when I looked to see most recently that we'd picked up a couple more members. I guess the slow constant growth is a sign people are interested, and the various members do have some times intriguing profiles to look at.

Justin is about the only person at tribe.net I've had much to do with other than the Voice of Roma representative who is one of my three friends too at tribe.net.(I'm involved with Voice of Roma as a volunteer at their annual HERDELJEZI festivals to raise money to help Kosovoan Rromani impacted by the war; which is horrific often <www.voiceofroma.com> )

I once had four tickets to a Yuri Yunakov performance at U. C. Berkeley and had them left for Justin with a friend working in a music store in Berkeley, but they were never used.(I didn't know I couldn't get a refund...opps!) I've been in a master class with Yuri and have heard him play a few times now, who is a very nice man and endures my bad musicianship affably which is a rare and appreciated encouragement.(I think I've had twenty saxophones total; and now have three altos, a Yamaha YAS-23 that is exactly like one Yuri is photographed playing on a CD cover I've seen, a '51 Buescher Aristocrat made the year I was born that has rarely been played, and a '29 Buescher which needs an overhaul badly I got in '97 I'd played until unplayable held together with elastic hair ties, nylon thread and rubber bands, when I'd got the Yamaha in 2003)

By the way, I'm probably the only person who has proven scientifically that the saxophone is the center of the universe. The universe really has no center of course, but in a relative sense were this possible the saxophone would be it.

My contention is that the past five millennia of human social evolution, as macrobiotic theorist Georges Ohsawa points out, has been devoted to technological development at the expense of the advancement of most other facets of the human potential.(Ohsawa says "mastery of fire and salt" or in other words metallurgy and chemistry) He credits the ice ages and the much more difficult to survive in environment of Europe for the phenomena, which also led to the dominance of global society by Europeans and such odious institutions as the African slave trade with the western hemisphere.

The saxophone was invented and developed by Adolph Sax in the nineteenth century, an era in Europe especially when the greatest minds then, of which Sax was surely one, were communicating much more directly with the lay person of society; unlike now and which developed so rapidly during the twentieth century, where specialization is the rule and intelligence is made into an esoteric pursuit almost alien to the masses of humanity.

I've been greatly moved as no doubt many of you have; by the music and musicianship of the late great baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan whose albums from a live Paris concert with Carson Smith, Shadow Wilson and Bob Brookmeyer and one with Thelonious Monk were two I'd been given with several others as a youth by my uncle who'd been a jazz pianist.

From those albums I'd especially liked, particularly the Paris concert and "Bernies Tune" I'd had a love of Mulligan's playing and as a music student I'd followed his career until I'd ended up with an unusual album of his AGE OF STEAM(which should be reissued!) that is mostly an effort of his at composing and arranging for a group of about ten or twelve musicians; and which has a great composition called "Maytag" dedicated to his mother's washing machine and a wonderful sound very much like one of those I remember from my own childhood very vividly; sloshing along merrily always, but which once had so terrified me once when changing cycles my father had picked me up from the floor next to it in our utility room so suddenly he'd thrown his back out and made a painful scream so that when I'd looked up at his face he'd changed momentarily into a werewolf before my eyes just as actor Carl Bentz had on the DONNA REED SHOW on television which evidently made an impression on me then as a small child.

I guess from this great and unusual for him Gerry Mulligan album; I'd thought of how much saxophones look like steam engines...there used to be often in Puget Sound in Washington state Jazz Cruises on Seattle's Virginia V steam boat; and a person could go and look at the big steam engines in the vessel's bowels the crew liked to show off, which were always shiny and polished with much brass, so very saxophone like to look at if you'd been thinking along such lines as was easy if so inclined as several great horn players were always aboard holding forth in the jams just above.

I also have been fooling around making primitive woodwind instruments, and one of which uses a plastic automotive automatic transmission fluid funnel with an alto saxophone mouthpiece which I put tone holes into the funnel so playable like a penny whistle or recorder. The tone holes were placed by tapping with my fingers as if playing, on the plastic of the funnel until I seemed to get a nice resonant sound where I'd then drill a hole and which I'd then expand to try and get an accurate pitch and good sound; but working in the very hard plastic using just old worn round chain saw files I found I didn't get a very good scale or intonation.

As a consequence I'd tried to see if there were anyway I could figure out to mathematically locate the tone holes on another funnel; and somehow by trail and error came up with a formulae which hasn't yet helped me place the tone holes, but where by I'd found that the volume of a sphere the same height as a cylinder is two thirds that of the cylinder. This was a fairly simple thing to figure out or I'd of not been able to and which seems as if feasibly a way to locate the tone holes on a conical bore...there has to be some sort of a formulae Sax used I'd guess?

What was unusual about that though, is that a couple years later watching PBS television I caught a very interesting show about the ancient Greek philosopher/scientist Archemedes who insisted on having the same formulae I discovered(which he'd also invented) inscribed on his tomb.(the show was mostly about a book of his thought lost a thousand years ago rediscovered recently that a Byzantine prayer book had been printed over the original text of; which they'd claimed if not lost for so long would've likely allowed travel to the moon about five hundred years ago!)

One of the theories of mine I've thought of which may or may not be accurate, is that the star and crescent of the Muslim flag represents a celestial body like a comet or asteroid hurling towards a collision with the earth. Since about 800 A. D. the Moslems were very scientifically advanced compared with the rest of the global society perhaps then the idea of the dangers of such a thing happening were on some of the more intelligent thinker's minds of that time and amongst that faith.

To me, and again there was a PBS television special on just such a thing, the ultimate purpose of five thousand years of technological evolution may be just such a venture, to develop the means whereby the earth can be protected from collision with other objects in space. The show on PBS about this says there is a comet which will pass within the orbits of artificial satellites going around the earth in 2012 which then will return in 2032 and depending on the earth's gravitational influence in 2012 this same comet could collide with the earth in 2032 which were that to happen would render evolution back to the level of cock roaches.

I've long now been a student of such human potential interests as yoga and macrobiotics; and thus realize how little society currently devotes to the support of much of the possibility inherent in humanity. And the idea that the technological developments of the past five thousand years have often and sometimes exclusively been driven by war is an obvious truth, which has conditioned our species and the rest of the planet to a belligerent way of being that is wholly inefficient and otherwise unnecessary, but for the development of reasonable alternatives which evidently take a good deal of time to procure and institute.

Given that we as a collective of humans can survive and transcend this current stage of our being; then I think a likely remnant of these thousands of years of technology, culminating in the golden era of the tendency during the nineteenth century, could be Adolph Sax's saxophone. If you are a serious student of the horn and the music playable by this amazing instrument, you can realize the potential of the saxophone is still greatly unexplored and fascinating to speculate about the future of. In society less driven by a combative mentality and diffidence to individual survival and enjoyment; the potential of music and musicianship as a whole would become much more central to our common experience, and greatly expanded in scope and influence socially too.

With I think the saxophone representing a level of technology which best encompasses both primitive and complex idioms with a focus between the two as they say "cosmically" aligned in a phenomenological balance between nature and the specific ergonomic realities of our species. Thus, "the center of the universe." So to speak.

I got offerred a last minute gig Tonight @ Air Conditioned Lounge in Santa Monica (2819 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, CA, 90405 310.829.3700) I should be starting around 9 pm and I'd really dig it if you could come by! It's free, so bring as many
people as you like (I get a bar percentage, so think about your alky buddies...)

Since this is a lounge and not a club, I will be sporting more of the "Velvet" side of my sound, not the "Rough & Ready" dancefloor assault (i.e., no "Doom's Night" but possibly some Bugz In The Attic.)

I was looking for some information about good bands and he told me about this tribe. Specificaly, i like a lot acid jazz combined with funky rithms. I ve had some problems finding good bands on this. I hope some of you could help me to know some realy new material. Im sure that theres some awsome music hiding somewhere and waiting to be heard. Particularly, my traditional music preferences are among 60s and 70s rock, a little bit of jazz, latin rithms, and tango. If somebody likes this genres, im totally available to exchange music and information.

Colin now lives in New York, so this is one of those rare semi-annual shows for the Transmission Trio. This will be their only Eastbay show this trip.

Transmission Trio and Transmission Quintet (adding guitarist Roger Riedlbauer and trumpeter Ara Anderson) will perform on this show. You've GOT to catch these guys if you want to hear some of the best jazz performers anywhere. Seriously.

Opening for Transmission is/are the BOXCAR SAINTS, a bluesy band fronted by Dave Hudson (recently profiled in a cover story in the SF Weekly) singing about hard life experiences in the Midwest. (And you think you've had it rough...)

Quotes about Transmission:

"...Transmission blows audiences away with high energy music that nearly defies description."-- The Current

"Transmission Trio's avant-garde fusion of improvisational or "free" jazz, hip hop and rock reeks of uber-cool, smoke-filled lounges where well-cocktailed cats and kittens talk art, existentialism and other such heavy things." --SF Examiner
spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never
tasted his mix before, and you love progressive
cooking, he will blow you away. The folks who have
made it up to SF so far were well rewarded by a
quality of culinary skills you will be hard pressed to find
in the bay area.

And finally, spinning the images on the walls we
have two brand new artists....

JENNALEX, aka Jennifer Alexander, is an artist living
and working in San Francisco. Originally from the
sandhills of North Carolina, she spent her childhood
wandering through pine forests along the Cape Fear
River, staring at the sun out of the window of her
classroom, and watching the grass grow threw cracks in
the pavement. These early influences still persist in
her work to this day as evidenced in her fascination
with nature, the human impact on it, and the way light
works with different elements. She continued her
education at the North Carolina School of the Arts,
where she focused her attention on Scene Design for
Theatre, and continued to develop an interest in
written and spoken words. After she received her BFA,
she packed all her belongings in a covered wagon
(actually a white pickup truck with a camper shell)
and headed west to California, where she continued
honing her craft through years of figure drawing and
various digital explorations, until she became
fascinated with plastic and began combining epoxy
resin castings with light. Her passion for poetry,
nature, philosophy and music are main influences in
her work. Recently, she developed a strong interest in
drawing portraits. Focusing her eye on humanity and
drawing out the deeper subconscious levels of her
subjects are what drive her in this process. Her muse
has led her to explore many different mediums, from
ink, watercolor, and pastels, to video, mobiles,
converted chainsaws, and epoxy resin. www.jennalex.com

and Randy Clark,

"I began shooting photos as a boy in the 1960s. In
1966 my father (an excellent photographer, himself)
gave me a 35mm single-lens reflex camera, and I have
used that medium ever since, with the addition of a
digital camera in 2002.

In high school, I studied composition, print-making,
and photo essays with Tim Wilbers, who now teaches
photography and animation at the University of Dayton,
Ohio. That is the extent of my formal training so far,
though I've learned much from other photographers—both
their pictures and their writings.

People, objects, scenery: any of these can excite me
by their variety, by the mystery of this world, and by
the things that light can do. I will be exhibiting 18
prints of my photos this month of December"
www.randyclarkphoto.com

So there you have it. If you like to eat amazing food,
while listening to smooth eclectic beats, and viewing
the interesting visual interpretations of our
beautiful planet, this is the night for you!

"Tilatila", "Tilatila", "Tilatila"!
Greetings All,

Since we have officially become a weekly event we
decided that it would be appropriate to give our
Saturday nights offering an original name.

So here it is:

Triptych Bistro Presents......

"TilaTila" on Saturday nights!
(That's Swahili for well mixed...)

The scunderground collective is manifesting a more
eclectic mix to the bay area cultural scene. This
will include dj'ing with an emphasis on challenging
the genre specific, the latest in visual art, and
amazing, progressive food.

It's all going down every Saturday night at a fairly
new bistro in the city of SF called "Triptych". You
can check out this beautiful indoor/outdoor space at
their website here:

www.triptychsf.com/

So we have myself, Dj ABC on the dub plates, spinning
the vinyl in the styles of soul, funk, downtempo,
instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat, acid-jazz,
afro beat, deep house, ambient, and a few other
experimental surprises. Always featuring artists only
to be heard at Triptych.

And in the kitchen we have another scunderground
member, Chef Craig Howell, spinning an eclectic mix of
California cuisine, Mediterranean, French, and other
spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never
tasted his mix before, and you love progressive
cooking, he will blow you away. The folks who have
made it up to SF so far were well rewarded by a
quality of culinary skills you will not find in Santa
Cruz.

And finally now spinning the images on the walls we
have a brand new artist. Blake Tucker is a primarily
landscape photographer who creates unique,
hand-crafted original artwork from his own digitally
manipulated photography. They are presented on canvas
like traditional paintings and will delight your
visual senses. Works range from 8" x 10" to large 44"
by 60". Check out his website at www.blaketucker.com.

So there you have it. If you like to eat amazing food,
while listening to smooth eclectic beats, and viewing
the interesting visual interpretations of our
beautiful planet, this is the night for you!
Greetings All,

Well summer is finally over and the craziness that ensued has settled a bit. So now the scunderground collective finally has some time to once again attempt to bring a more eclectic mix to the bay area dj music scene. But this time we are also going to bring other elements in the mix, that being interesting visual art, and amazing, progressive food.

It's all going down this Saturday night at a fairly new venue in the city of SF called "Triptych". You can check out this beautiful space at their website here:

www.triptychsf.com/
So we have myself, Dj ABC on the dub plates, spinning the licorice pizza in the styles of soul, funk, downtempo, instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat, acid-jazz, afro beat, deep sexy house, micro house, and a few other surprises.

And in the kitchen we have another scunderground member, Chef Craig Howell, spinning an eclectic mix of California cuisine, Mediterranean, French, and other spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never tasted his mix before, and you love progressive cooking, he wil blow you away. All the food is hand picked by him and fresh as the sea breeze on a warm spring day. ;)

And finally spinning the images on the walls we have artist David W. Dieter.

David W. Dieter's paintings and drawings are inspired
by dance and music. He is influenced by the human form
in classical and contemporary dance and its
relationship to its environment. He draws inspiration
from local and international dancers in their natural
and unnatural settings. David's art is mixed media
utilizing acrylics, pastels and collage in his
painting and drawings while exploring form, movement,
emotion and the relationship of dancers to each other
and their settings. He combines traditional dance with
new forms creating a hybrid style.

So there you have it, if you like to eat good food, while listening to smooth eclectic beats, while viewing the interesting visual interpretations of this movement this is the night for you!

Here are the venue details:
When?
Hope to see you out there, Peace, Aaron (aka Dj ABC)

p.s. Sorry it's not in Santa Cruz for all you scunderground locals, but I currently have no options for an event of this type. But if you make the drive and come say hi, I will see if Craig can do something special for you. ;) Right Craig? hehe....

Greetings Again,

Gilles Peterson from the BBC is in SF this Saturday
night. He is performing with some great live acts, and
a amazing local dj support from the crew at Massive
Selector. But rather than repeat all the bio's just go
to their main site to check it all out:

http://www.massiveselector.com

If you like your broken-hop beats on the jazz tip,
DON'T MISS THIS SHOW. I talked to one of the promoters
yesterday and they are saying that tickets are moving
like crazy, so it may sell out...

On a similar musical note we served up some serious
jazzadelic inspired food, art, and beats at Tryptich
last Saturday. It went smooothly enough that the owner
wants to make it a regular happening!

Thanks to my sister Michelle, Darrell, and Stephon for
supporting with some friendly faces.

So we're back serving "Something Else" for dinner this
Saturday night at a colorful new venue in the city of
SF called "Triptych". It was also recently voted as
having the best "disco bathroom" in the city, so you
don't want to miss that. ;)

You can check out this beautiful indoor/outdoor space
at their website here:

www.triptychsf.com/

It's only a short distance to Gille's party, and a
great way to relax and have some groovy grub before
you go, go, go.

We have myself again, Dj ABC on the dub plates,
spinning the vinyls in the styles of soul, funk,
downtempo, instrumental hip-hop, dub, broken-beat,
acid-jazz, afro beat, deep sexy house, ambience, and a
few other surprises.

And in the kitchen we have another scunderground
member, Chef Craig Howell, spinning an eclectic mix of
California cuisine, Mediterranean, French, and other
spontaneousness on the heated plates. If you've never
tasted his mix before, and you love progressive
cooking, he wil blow you away. All the food is hand
picked by him and fresh as the sea breeze on a warm
spring day. ;) Also the wine and import beer list is
not to be missed!

And finally spinning the images on the walls we have
artist David W. Dieter.

David W. Dieter's paintings and drawings are inspired
by dance and music. He is influenced by the human form
in classical and contemporary dance and its
relationship to its environment. He draws inspiration
from local and international dancers in their natural
and unnatural settings. David's art is mixed media
utilizing acrylics, pastels and collage in his
painting and drawings while exploring form, movement,
emotion and the relationship of dancers to each other
and their settings. He combines traditional dance with
new forms creating a hybrid style. He's already sold
seven pieces at Tryptich since opening his show!

So there you have it, if you like to eat quality food,
listen to smooth eclectic beats, while viewing the
interesting visual interpretations of this movement,
this is a great warm up spot for you. Then it's off to
see Gilles and crew do their thing at the Mezzanine!

Here are the Tryptich bistro details:

When?

ABOUT GILLES PETERSON

The word “DJ” takes on ever broader meaning. At its root, it still boils down to a disk jockey who spins vinyl for a living. But under the DJ rubric are radio DJs, club DJs who beat-match tracks, as well as “turntablists” who scratch. Many DJs are also creators who DJ to supplement their livelihoods and get their tracks out to audiences, while others take on roles as tastemakers, influencing the public through compilations and record labels.

English DJ Gilles Peterson is perhaps the ultimate _expression of the latter style of DJ. From his early days as a club and pirate radio DJ through his more recent incarnations as label boss and BBC radio host, Peterson has shaped tastes through an untiring crusade to spread the side of the dance music spectrum occupied by jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, Latin and house music.

"One of the most important tastemakers in music this decade" according to MIXMAG

"The man, the myth, the legend ... the incredible selections of arguably one of the most influential DJs of our time." - Miles Ahead

ABOUT DWELE

Neo-soul singer/songwriter/producer Dwele grew up on Detroit's west side, listening to soul music from Motown visionaries Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as well as jazz on the radio. Born Andwele Gardner, he began writing songs at the age of ten, after his father was murdered outside his home, and attended Cody High in Detroit. Dwele spent a year studying music at Wayne State but then opted for an informal education, making music at his home while living in Dearborn and working for AAA. His demo tape, 1998's The Rize, made waves around the Motor City, and he spent time collaborating with Detroit hip-hop group Slum Village and Philadelphia rapper Bahamadia. Signed to Virgin on the strength of his songwriting and performance skills, Dwele released Subject in mid-2003 and cemented his appeal with European audiences (he was a favorite on Gilles Peterson's influential Radio 1 program) with a tour that summer. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
ABOUT THE REBIRTH

"...a storm of jazzy live action out of LA....solid R&B tinged tracks that remind us of the good old days of The Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai's first albums and the original Giant Step parties...lots of thick, layered vocals mixed with inner city heat."

Los Angeles-based septet, The Rebirth, offers its long anticipated release, This Journey In, to fans on Kajmere Sound/KSD Music in spring 2005. In this compelling new 11-track album recorded in the band’s hometown, The Rebirth matches its musical vitality with a gift for lucid poetry and songwriting, creating a rich sound built on an organic blend of new and traditional soul, hip-hop, jazz, and funk. These elements make the group’s music both highly progressive and a throwback to the classic soul bands: Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramp, Pleasure, Rotary Connection, Side Effect and Roy Ayers.
D'Angelo, 31, born Michael Eugene Archer, was in a 2003 Hummer sport utility vehicle on Sept. 19 when it crossed the roadway and struck a fence, ejecting the singer, State Police Sgt. Kevin Barrick said Monday. Archer wasn't wearing a seat restraint, Barrick said.

Bio:

Respected and emulated New York-based producer, DJ, and label chief Osunlade grew up in a musical environment; as a youngster, he took piano lessons and sang in his church's choir. At the age of 17, he joined the cast of the popular children's show Sesame Street as a presenter. He later produced music for the program. During the late ‘80s, he started working as a producer and session hand; since starting out, he has leant his talents to records by Musiq, Patti LaBelle, Najee, India Arie and Eric Benet. In 1999, Osunlade established the Yoruba label and began releasing deep house productions of his own while cultivating new artists. For his first album, 2001's Paradigm, the producer hooked up with the U.K.'s Soul Jazz label, which released the excellent LP and increased his profile significantly as a result. Easily one of the most gifted producers of soul/funk-influenced deep house, Osunlade – an ordained priest in the African religion of Ifa – graces everything he touches with spiritual, uplifting vibes. Offering, a mix album released by R2, came out in 2002.

This is the first new release by Great Britain's Soul Jazz label — widely known for its dynamite reissues of everything from killer Nuyorican soul to New Orleans funk to funky and militant jazz — in years. This debut album by a New York-based house artist comes as a surprise. But it's a welcome one. Osunlade drenches his house in Brazilian, funk, and Latin colors, blending it all into a thoroughly modern dancefloor music that is as compelling to the ears as it is motivating to the booty. The singles from the set include "Blackman," a poetic move toward jazzy house with sampled chords from Bobby Konders' "The Poem." It's a late-night groove, laid-back but insistent, with a rap about Osunlade's upbringing and his spiritual beliefs. It's a kind of housed-out manifesto of positive Afrocentrism. Also notable is the traditional Brazilian tune "Oxissi de Focha Branca," with its drum chants and a call and response rhythm that retains its field recording primitivism long after the house beats kick in. The set closes with "The Deep," a driving house rhythm set against a rolling, one-note bassline interspersed with a two-chord, three-sequence vamp kissed by a harmonica sample in the groove. The harmonica is the lead "melodic" instrument (it's a Charlie Musselwhite sample), though it's just riffing in the cut and carrying the track through its intervals. This is an auspicious debut by a young cat who has brought something new and very different to the world from the house scene in New York.

Pushin On is the second album from Quantic’s live band Quantic Soul Orchestra and the first to be domestically released on Ubiquity. It follows hot on the heels of the widely acclaimed Quantic album Mishaps Happening.

"Putting something back" is Will Holland’s reason for starting The Quantic Soul Orchestra. After releasing electronic/studio-based albums as Quantic he wanted to work on a strictly live project, to “put the funk back in it”, and to pay homage to a genre that continues to heavily influence his releases. QSO is his chance to record and produce an album with creative and like minded musicians. The Orchestra make killer funk with enough bottom-end to burn any dance floor, and the album features several tracks with the super powerful vocals of Alice Russell. In the USA Quantic’s Mishaps Happening album ended up in many “Best of” lists for 2004, tracks were featured on CSI Miami, the Pepsi iTunes ad campaign (during Super Bowl), and was given thumbs up by everyone from Vibe to XLR8R. QSO have played The Big Chill, Glastonbury, Isle of Wight, and many other festivals in Europe - Quantic Soul Orchestra recently performed in Toronto at Harbourfront's Beats, Breaks and Culture Festival.

here's some news on a new album from Jamiroquai...

Welcome along to what promises to be a really exciting year for all Jamiroquai fans out there.

In the Jamiroquai camp we're all getting ready for the release of the bands' sixth album. The album is almost complete and the final touches are being put to the last few tracks.

Jay and Sony are currently deciding upon what the first single will be, and
there are currently a couple of great tracks being considered. Once a decision has been made the promo video will be shot and additional single tracks/remixes decided. Although no dates have been set, current plans indicate that the album is due to hit the streets sometime late Spring with the single shortly beforehand.

We're still in the planning stage of a world tour that will hopefully begin in the Summer. We're also hoping to play at some Summer festivals as well but
nothing has been confirmed yet. Stay tuned.

The band are currently rehearsing some of the new tracks in preparation for the upcoming tour and things are starting to get really exciting.

Regular visitors to the J.Talk message board will probably be aware that we are in the process of revising the site for the new single and album so prepare to see some new designs, a new forum and lots of exclusive news from the band coming to you real soon.

Thanks for reading and expect more updates from Jamiroquai over the coming weeks and months.

J-BOOGIE is a San Francisco multi-genre DJ/producer
who blends a mix of dub, hip-hop, soul, funk, latin,
jazz, afro, bossa, house, electro and broken beats. He
has been on the air at KUSF for over 10 years,
producing Beatsauce on 90.3fm. Dubtronic Science is
his next step in production and live music. J-BOOGIE's
DUBTRONIC SCIENCE blends an organic fusion of
musicians and the dj, mixing turntable beats with live
percussion, sitar, flute, sax, vocals, and other live
elements in a constantly evolving improvisation. The
sounds of Dubtronic Science have been featured at The
Fillmore, The Justice League, DNA Lounge, Elbo Room,
111 Minna, Mezzanine, Boulder Theatre, The Crystal
Ballroom, Hollywood Athletic Club, Root Down, Amoeba
Records, and Fais Do Do in Los Angeles. They have also
toured with OM performing live in Denver, Portland,
Seatlle, San Diego, Santa Fe, Austin, and New York.
J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science full-length album is
available on OM Records and features Goapele, Gina
Rene, Omega, People Under The Stairs, and more. You
can also hear music featured on Ubiquity Recordings,
Future Primitive Sounds, BSI Records, plus remixes of
Mark Farina, Soulstice, and Romanowski.

Originally a native of Portland, OR, Justin Boland
(aka J-Boogie) relocated to San Francisco, CA, and
founded the Dubtronic Science collective. Originally
the name of his radio show, the concept expanded into
the clubs. Dubtronic combines the soul of world music,
hip-hop, broken beat, and deep house in a live
improvisational setting. Their debut release was
issued by OM Records in 2003.

A rich blend of hip-hop, broken beat, dub, and deep
house infects this debut release from J Boogie and his
Dubtronic Science collective. As can be immediately
discerned from the package itself, Dubtronic's whole
aesthetic focuses on a warmth otherwise missing from
the majority of downtempo records. Similar in
diversity to Recloose, the collective gets it right
from start to finish. An impressive debut from these
West Coast staples and a sure sign of promising things
in the future.

Hey everyone. I'm a big fan of Medeski,Martin, and Wood, but I came across a brand new organ trio out of LA called "Big Organ Trio". They only have bootlegs out and are working on a debut release, but I saw them out here at a live show and they were really nasty live!! I was so impressed I decided to post this message. They have a temporary website I got ahold of:
http://homepage.mac.com/bernman/bigorgantrio
Can't remeber the organists name yet, (something like Mike Mann) but he get's some sounds out of that thing I've never quite heard before. Even crazier tones than Emerson, Lake, and Palmer at times, but they threw down. And somehow they added a new take on organ bands, completely different from MMW, Jimmy Smith (the real fatha of acid jazz), or even the new Benevento/Russo duo. Good stuuf! Check out the link for mp3 bootlegs if interested.

ARABESQUE BURLESQUE -- if you missed them on Halloween, here's your chance to see them NOW!

JAM stuff. The musicians from both bands will jam together at some point and create who knows what -- it might be jazz, it might be folk, it might be TV theme songs, whatever.

Look for 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 saxes, 1 upright bass, 1 drum kit, 1 accordion, 1 fiddle, 1 musical saw, assorted other instruments including an old school phonograph.

the music will be so inspiring you'll want to go out and buy your own saw, or trumpet or whatever.

I'm a huge Jazzanova fan, it's just that I'm more partial to live sets. Speaking of Jazzanova, Clara Hill who is featured on the 'In Between' joint has a cd out called 'Restless Times' and their are some choice cuts on it. Might be worth picking up. Lastly, if any of you are not hip to 4Hero, you should peep them out as well.

For people in the SF Bay area, perhaps we could organize a sort of listening party (or some other way of sharing music without running afoul of the law, <cough cough>) if there is interest.

Examples I like:

Zero7: Simple Things
Marc Moulin: Top Secret
De-Phazz: Detunized Gravity, Death by Chocolate
Hotel Costes #'s 2, 3, 4, 5
Mushroom Jazz #'s 1 and 4 (though I prefer #1 in a mix with other CDs; the beat gets a little too monotonous for me at some points when I listen to it straight through)
Llorca: Newcomer
Lemon Jelly: ky

Examples I don't like:

Nuspirit Helsinki
Jazzanova
Mushroom Jazz #'s 2 and 3
De-Phazz: Godsdog (though it has some good tracks)
Lemon Jelly: Lost Horizons

(most of these are OK but not worth my listening time)

Some things that probably aren't Acid Jazz but sort of fall in the same cognitive category for me that I like a lot:

Rinocerose: Installation Sonore
Fourtet: Dialogue, Pause
State of Bengal: Visual Audio
Loop Guru: Duniya
Plaid: Double Figure, Rest Proof Clockwork
A Grape Dope: Missing Dragons
RjD2: Dead Ringer
St Germaine: Tourist
from the jill scott website:

Fans have been waiting for it. The music industry has been anticipating it. And now three times Grammy nominated vocal sensation Jill Scott is about to deliver yet another collection of luminous and poignant songs as her new CD, Beautifully Human, Words And Sounds Vol. 2, is unveiled August 31 on Hidden Beach Recordings.

This alluring wordsmith has again created songs that are nurtured in the heart and sung with love. In fact, the first single, “Golden,” talks about freedom and empowering oneself to live to the fullest, to treat the gift of life as if it “is” golden. Jill will soon shoot the music video for “Golden” in the coming weeks. For Beautifully Human, Jill collaborated with some of her original production team who helped craft Who Is Jill Scott?Words and Sounds Vol. 1--James Poyser, Andre Harris and Vidal Davis and Ivan Barias and Carvin Haggins (“Mama’s Boys”). Scott also sought a fresh approach by going into the studio with new up and coming producers such as Ant Bell, P-nut, and Pete Kuzma, and someone she has long wanted to collaborate with, Raphael Saadiq.

NEW GREYBOY 'SOUL MOSAIC' CD/DLP

Clearly our most anticipated record release of the year, Ubiquity proudly presents Greyboy’s first album in three years. Entitled "Soul Mosaic,” this brand-new full-length was recorded 10 years after the release of "Freestylin'," the ground-breaking first Greyboy full-length album for Ubiquity (which to date has sold over 100,000 copies and is the cornerstone of our label).

The tracks crafted into a fourth Greyboy album include groundbreaking territory for the Southern California based producer/DJ. For the first time he has recorded full vocal songs adding a new soulful dimension to his music. The trademark laid-back West Coast Greyboy beats remain central to "Soul Mosaic" but are now enhanced by collaborations that took place over the past two years.

Vocalists like Bay Area underground favorite Bart Davenport formerly of The Kinetics and now a solo artist on Paris Caramel records sings on the two sold-out singles "To Know You is To love You" and "Genevieve", cover versions of a Stevie Wonder tune (originally recorded by Syreeta) and Cymande respectively. "Genevieve" was nominated as one of the songs of the year by Radio 1's Worldwide host Gilles Peterson. East Coast based Sharon Jones has made a storming come back with Daptone Records over recent years and also appears on two tracks. San Francisco up n'comer Bing Ji Ling adds a lil' Shuggie Otis folksy soul and guitar while MCs like Mainflo (TVT), and musicians and turntablists like D-Styles and Ricci Rucker (Sound In Color) maintain the hip hop pressure. Rounding out the mosaic are co- producers like the UK-based Quantic and West Coaster Mike Andrews, who recently had a hand in the Christmas #1 spot on the UK charts with a version of Tears For Fears "Mad World" from the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

"I couldn't have done this when I recorded Freestlyin', working with artists from all around the world is one of the beauties of modern technology," says Greyboy.

Working up the rough drafts for "Soul Mosaic" Greyboy recorded parts, solos, and lyrics with guests returning to the lab in his Long Beach home to deconstruct and sift through all the elements. And just like the aesthetic of Killingsworth, the well-known Case Study House architect who built the house which Greyboy is restoring, less is definitely more. In fact the process of restoring the home is not unlike his approach to making music. His mid-century modern building has been altered, remodeled and added onto over the years, Greyboy is currently putting it back the way it was supposed to be.

"I constantly found myself stripping back the amount of musical layers recorded in session and even the tools I use to make the music,” explains Greyboy. "I am a collector of sounds and objects, but I really only like a few things that are very good not a bunch of stuff that's just OK - it's definitely about quality, not about quantity..." he adds.

Greyboy warns people ahead of time that he will be radically changing tracks after studio sessions are over. However, his time with guest artists very much shapes a tracks final outcome. The cover versions on this album were ideas he became really enthusiastic about because of who he was working with and the mood they arrived at during studio sessions.

A decade ago "Freestylin'" became a surprise underground hit, it was a building block of the early acid jazz movement and still holds cult status today. Since then Greyboy has released the equally jazz-based instrumental "Land of the Lost" and the soundtrack and hip hop inspired "Mastered The Art," which featured musicians and MCs in a prelude to the "Soul Mosaic" album.
Greyboy has recorded with AG (Showbizz and AG), and the Greyboy Allstars (whom he helped put together and produce). His music has been featured in movies like Get Shorty, Celtic Pride, The Kelly Slater Surf Pro video game, Budweiser commercials, and he was handpicked to provide a mix CD for DC shoes in 2003.

Over the years Greyboy has DJ'd in Japan, Europe, and across the USA. His largest DJ gig was to 5000 people in the countryside outside of Rome, but throughout the summer of 2003 he played to over 20, 000 people a night on tour with Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. His DJ philosophies have never changed, he practices to stay technically on top of his game but never practices a set for a specific night preferring to put together tunes and based on the vibe at each gig.

Included on the CD version of the album are remixes by Paul Nice (Biz Markie) and Quantic, previously only available on limited edition vinyl. Watch for Greyboy DJ dates in USA, Europe and Japan Spring 2004.
